Ken Wax to speak at Lotusphere again

Tue 11 Jan 2005, 10:59 PM

A friend mentioned that Ken Wax was coming to speak at Lotusphere.  I replied that he certainly wasn't mentioned on the website, especially in the schedule, which I have gotten to know quite well.  But if Ken's website is to be trusted, he is indeed coming to speak.  Here is the page on Ken Wax's site.  I would love to hear him, as I hear he is fabulous.  The only problem is, the rumor is that he will be speaking at 11:00am, and I will be busy in JMP104 Java for the IBM Lotus Domino Developer, one of my two or three can't miss sessions.  Oh well, let me know how it is.

That rumor is true. I've attended Ken's sessions in the past, and he's a "can't miss" speaker, regardless of the topic or content. He actually emailed me in late November, asking for some advice in approaching IBM about speaking at LS. Talk about the master asking the student for advice!

He is speaking from 11 am until 12:15, as he sadly informed me via email the other day. I wanted very badly to see his session (not even knowing what it was about), and I think he was planning on dropping by mine.

Although I'm bummed at missing it, I think I am strangely conforted knowing he won't be out there in my audience... ;-)

Ben, as good as I'm sure it is, don't sweat the Java for Domino Developers. Its one of those things like XML that gets made a much bigger deal than it is.

First, its just java. There are a few complicating factors to deal with:

1. Getting Eclipse read to code for java -- mostly, that's pointing to a couple of java files and setting the eclipse environment to require 1.3 compatibility rather than 1.4 (unless we're talking D7).

2. Understanding the difference between establishing a session directly or through the corba interface -- its really one or two lines of code difference and has a few impacts on choices.

3. Keeping track of, and remembering to recycle your Domino objects when you're done with them, but absolutely not before (something which can be tricky in multi-threaded, recursive code).

4. Understanding the difference between main and notesMain, thread and notesthread.

Beyond that, just code. The object model is nearly the same (just enough differences to piss you off now and then).

Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence there, Andrew. It's my opinion that the whole Notes admin stuff is pretty overblown, too... :-)

Boys, boys, boys... Both of your topics are important, both of your sessions will be well received, both of you are likely to receive love notes and panties from your adoring fans (well, maybe not).

I want to see this session because it is so much fun, not because it will turn me into a Java developer. That is the same reason I would go to Andrew's session. I hardly ever plan to use the Admin client anyway, and when I do I'll probably just call and bug Andrew anyway to ask him how.

The problem is, Tom is right that Ken Wax is supposed to be a "can't miss" speaker.

So now I am undecided. wax on wax off?

I need to check and see if anyone's purchased a Team-TSG thong prior to LS... :-)

My honest opinion on choosing between our session and Ken's? Go see Ken. You saw the Java session last year, and I really think we caught lightning in a bottle. That session went *FAR* better than I could have hoped for. Much of the material would be a repeat, and you can always call and bug us if you have questions. :-)

Ken, on the other hand, is a master presenter. You owe it to yourself to see him in action. If I had a choice, I'd be there in the front row.

"Wax On"!

Ken Wax's session is BD Day -- thus, only open to partners. So, I think the jumpstarts like Tom's will still draw a very healthy crowd.

So long as we have more attendees than books to give away (36), I'll be happy. :-)

BDD, huh. Bummer. We customers like to hear Ken too.
