Julia & Julie movie posterMy wife was very interested in going to see Julia & Julie, about which I knew little.  It turned out to be a delight, better than she expected (and far better than I expected), partly because it was a fascinating parallel story and partly because both Meryl Streep and Amy Adams are wonderful, as usual.  I recommend it highly (yes, even for you guys who cringe at "chick flicks".  Go with someone beautiful and wonderful, as I did, and then even if you don't like it, she'll like it, which you'll like.)  Besides, it has the best use of a Talking Heads song that I have seen in any recent movie.

Joffrey Ballet posterLater in the weekend, we went to a simply incredible collaboration between the Cleveland Orchestra and Joffrey Ballet at Blossom Music Festival.  Now, I have to tell you that ballet is not my thing.  I enjoy culture with the best of them, but I find ballet a trial, a test of endurance.  Can I make it half way through before I nod off?  Usually not.  This, on the other hand, was captivating and cool.  A mixture of ballet and modern dance, with a wonderful homage to Richard Rodgers and Carousel at the end.  Perhaps it helped that, while most ballet is about 150 years old, and feels it, these were all relatively recent pieces.  Whatever, the orchestra was, as usual, fantastic, and the dancers were amazing.  My wife, who actually likes ballet, loved it as well.  If you ever get a chance to see the Joffrey Ballet, I recommend you give it a chance.

I didn't know you had sponsors. I enjoy The Nutcracker at Christmas, but it's the only ballet I've seen. So I figured women dance and men are like podiums for keeping balance as they sway and tip-toe to classical music. Modern ballet sounds a little different. Anyway, I'm glad you two enjoyed your weekend.
